How to Use an Air Die Grinder for Metal Polishing: Step-by-Step
Bit choice, speed control and a clean air supply decide the result when you use an air die grinder for metal polishing. This guide follows the order most workshops actually work in: set the tool up, remove material, then bring the surface to a finish. Every step below applies to the pneumatic die grinders we ship factory direct from Ningbo.

Choose the bit or polishing point
Match the accessory to the job. Grinding stones and mounted points handle deburring and weld cleanup. Finishing points and flap-style accessories work for smoothing and polishing after the heavy cutting is done. Our die grinders run on the standard 1/4″ (6 mm) shank accessories, and 1/8″ (3 mm) collets are available as an option on most models, so one tool can cover both coarse and fine work.
Set the collet and control the speed
Clamp the shank fully in the collet and tighten before opening the air. Speed matters more than pressure when polishing:
- Grinding and deburring: standard models run at 22,000–25,000 RPM (AT-7033 at 22,000 RPM, AT-7031 at 25,000 RPM).
- Polishing and finishing: use a low speed model. AT-4036 runs at 1,750 RPM and AT-513 at 3,300 RPM, which keeps the workpiece from overheating during extended polishing.
Let the tool reach speed before touching the metal, and keep the accessory moving across the surface instead of dwelling in one spot.
Sequence: grind first, polish second
- Remove weld beads, burrs and sharp edges with a grinding stone at working speed.
- Check the surface under light. Rough marks that remain need a second pass with a finer point.
- Switch to the polishing accessory and go over the area at low speed until the finish is even.
- Wipe the surface and inspect. Repeat only where needed.
Air supply, oil and safety
Standard operating conditions are 6.3 Bar /90 PSI through a 1/4″ PT inlet. Put two to three drops of pneumatic tool oil into the air inlet before each use session; it keeps the vanes running smoothly and protects the motor. Check which way your model exhausts (front or rear exhaust, listed per model) and point it away from the work surface. Wear eye protection while grinding. All PneuDieGrinder die grinders are CE certified (EN 792) for professional buyers.
Wholesale terms
MOQ is 50 pcs per model, mixed orders are welcome, and shipping is FOB Ningbo. Samples ship in 3–5 working days. Request a quotation or check the Wholesale Policy for payment and lead time details.
Common Polishing Mistakes
- Running standard speed for finish work.22,000 RPM is a grinding speed; polishing on low-speed models (AT-4036 at 1,750 RPM, AT-513 at 3,300 RPM) is what keeps the workpiece from overheating.
- Dwelling in one spot. Keep the accessory moving — stationary contact builds heat faster than the material can take it.
- Skipping the oil step. Two to three drops before the session keep the vanes sealed; a dry tool loses speed under load and sounds rough doing it.
- Worn points used past their life. A glazed or uneven point transfers its shape to the finish. Replace it before blaming the technique.
Matching Points to Materials
Grinding stones handle steel, welds and cast edges where material actually has to come off. Mounted points reach into corners and cavities for detail blending. For the finishing pass, use a polishing accessory at low speed so the surface is refined rather than cut. Pencil grinders with 3 mm points cover the smallest geometry — die cavities and detail features where a 1/4″ body cannot enter.
An Example Pass, Start to Finish
- AT-7033 with a grinding stone at working speed: take the weld bead down until the silhouette is close.
- Wipe, inspect under light, and repeat only where marks remain.
- Switch to the AT-4036 at 1,750 RPM with a polishing point and walk the whole area evenly.
- Final wipe and inspection. If the reflection still shows scratches, the sequence repeats from step three with a finer point.
Wholesale and Samples for Shops
Shops building a polishing station usually order two speed classes together: a standard grinder for prep and a low-speed model for finish. MOQ is 50 pcs per model, mixed orders are welcome with a$500 total, and samples ship in 3-5 working days at wholesale price plus shipping — the sample fee is credited to the first bulk order. Bulk runs take 15-25 working days after deposit, FOB Ningbo. Wholesale Policy has the payment and lead time detail.
When to Call the Finish Done
Stop when the wiped surface reflects evenly under light and no scratch pattern remains from the previous grit. If one area still shows the old pattern, the sequence repeats from the polishing step with a finer point rather than adding pressure — pressure is what creates heat marks, and heat marks mean starting over. Low-speed models exist precisely so the finish can be chased without crossing that line.
